Hello and welcome to HCM,
Red cell distribution width (RDW) is a parameter which measures the variation in size of red blood cells.
Red blood cells are of uniform sizes but when RDW is high this signifies a variation in sizes of red blood cells.
In addition to RDW, I suggest you to post other
RBC parameters like RBC count,
hemoglobin, RBC indices - MCV, MCH and MCHC for better interpretation of RDW.
Similarly Platelet distribution width (PDW) is a parameter which measures the variation in sizes of platelets.
PDW increases when there is variation in sizes of platelets.
Variation in sizes of platelets is seen when variously sized platelets are present as seen in regenerating
bone marrow or when there is rapid turn over of new platelets from the bone marrow.
Again PDW will be more informative if you post other parameters like
platelet count,
mean platelet volume (MPV).
Thanks and take care
