Have a report on my uncle which needs clarifying in laymans terms. It reads There is a small acute lacunar infarction affecting the right perventricular white matter. Widespread moderate to marked chronic small vessel disease with multiple bilateral lacunar infarctions. Generalised atrophy with secondary prominence of the ventricles and CFS spaces

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
The report is of a brain scan. It shows recent damage (infarction) due to stoppage of blood supply to the part. Its near a space called ventricle (through which cerebro-spinal fluid circulates in brain) in white matter of brain (which consists of small nerve fibers).
There is suggestion of generalized small blood vessel thickening in brain and this has resulted in many such small infarcts in brain. This has caused shrinking (atrophy) of brain and widening of ventricles and cerebro-spinal spaces in brain (due pulling of the walls of these structures by scars of the old infarcts). I have tried to explain in simplest words.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
