Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi Dr.i had scan at 20 weeks., and the Dr told me that the results had right choroid plexus cysts as recognized as minor soft marker for trisonomy 18. The association of choroid plexus cysts with trisonomy 21 is weak.there is also mild bilateral renal pelvic dilation R=4.4 L=4.9 .and dr said that usually resolves but may be associated with Down syndrome, vesico ureteric reflux or urinary tract obstruction .i hope you can give advice, I m very scared about the result.
Even though both these things are described as markers of down syndrome, the association is very weak. More over, the size mentioned for renal pelvic dilatation is also very small (usually >5-10mm is taken significant where as it is.
To look for down syndrome, there are more definitive tests available (like amniocentesis). But this we usually do when there are higher risk factors like maternal age>35 years, another baby with down syndrome, increased nuchal thickness in first trimester scan. If such factors are not there, you need not worry at this point, and just follow your doctors suggestion
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
