My ast is 960 Alt 1348 Rdw 19.7 Red blood cells 5.67 I am 41 year female with lupus My skin and eyes show no jaundice. I went to doctor due to nausea and feeling tired. No abdominal pain. Had ultrasound that may indicate onset of scarring. I am a very occasional drinker. What could it be?
Hello and welcome to HCM, High levels of SGOT and SGPT suggest damage to the liver cells or hepatocytes. Hepatocytes can be damaged by infections most commonly viral infections, drugs, toxins etc. An ultrasound revealing scarring is suspicious of cirrhotic changes. Other liver function tests- bilirubin- total and direct, alkaline phosphatase, gamma glutamyl transferase, total proteins are also required to know the exact status of liver functions. A high RDW suggests marked variation in the sizes of red blood cells and this change is seen in anemia most commonly iron deficiency anemia. A peripheral blood smear along with red cell indices - MCV, MCH and MCHC are required to know the cause of raised RDW. Management can be done after the result of investigations is obtained.
