One year old child with developmental delays had an MRI done. Report says there is thinning of the corpus callosum. Child has had surgeries to repair multiple heart defects and also has a microdeletion of q13. What does the thinning of the corpus callosum mean for her? What treatments may she need?
The corpus callosum is a concentration of nerve tissue that connects the right and left side of brain. Thinning of the corpus callosum is a congenital abnormality and might be causing delayed mental development in the child. It is seen in children born preterm but can be seen in term birth children also. Thinning of the corpus callosum during neurodevelopment may be associated with poor neuropsychological performance. There is no defenitive treatment for corpus callosum thinning at present and rehabilitation is most important to guide the early development of the affected child. Neuropsychological and cognitive testing done regularly might help the child to lead a near normal life.
