What Does My Routine Lab Test Report Indicate?

Hi I had routine lab work done. My AST was 97 and ALT 27. I am very concerned. Never had a problem with it. Six months ago it was 30. My question is can excessive exercise cause this elevation? I was doing hr long spin classes 5 times a week. Also treadmill, elliptical once a week with some weight training1-2 × a week. Thank you, Mary

Hello,

AST elevation without ALT points to a muscular "problem". Since you've been working out, the most likely cause is your physical activity. If you've had no symptoms and CPK is also mildy elevated (less than three times the highest normal value) then the cause is definitely muscular. Checking again a couple of days later would help to make sure it's not rising.

Contact me if you'd like more information. I'll be glad to help.

Kind Regards!
