What Does My Sputum Test Result Indicate?

Hi Doctor, A sputum test results were showing that I got an unusual bacteria called citrobacter koseri. I was given antibiotic Cipro for 7 days to cure it. After that, I had to do a sputum test again to see if it is gone, but it is still there. I was given another antibiotic called Apo-Sulfatrim DS 800/160mg for 10 days now by my doctor and I am on it. I wonder if this medicine will actually kill this bacteria forever or not. I am also a carrier of TB. Do you think that me being a carrier, I am more prone to that bacteria? I have 5 more days to finish my medication and hope that is going to be cured forever. Please let me know if maybe I should go to the hospital and have an IV treatment for it, or this medication will help me to get rid of it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Citrobacter Koseri is a gram negative motile bacillus that causes infection only if you are immuno-compromised. Since you have a history of TB, you got infected by Citrobacter Koseri. Get follow up treatments of TB done. Take high protein diet balanced with veggies & fruits.

Do workouts, stay away from polluted locations. Take adequate rest. Stay fit & immuno competent, you will not get prone to infections. Go for sputum & blood tests at regular intervals to stay on the safer side. Take the medications prescribed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
