Went to the ER because my lower back snapped/popped while changing a tire. The pain was so severe it dropped me to my knees and I couldn t hardly more. My legs and fingers are going numb (both sides). The doctor wrote on my paperwork (which I am coherent enough to read now), BILATERAL LOW BACK PAIN WITHOUT SCIATICA . What does that mean?
Sciatica basically is the pain that radiates along the course of sciatic nerves which goes down from your lower back to legs. The doctor in ER has just ruled out sciatica as a diagnosis and labelled your case as of bilateral (meaning on both sides) back pain. This back pain can be due to problem regarding ligaments, inter vertebral discs or bone.....as the nerves of the legs originate in the region of lower back that is why you have numbness in legs.
The normal course of treatment in such cases is conservative meaning pain killers and muscle relaxants along with physiotherapy. In case the pain doesn't settle down with conservative treatment in six months then I would suggest you consult an orthopedic specialist for clinical evaluation, imaging scans such as MRI and further treatment accordingly.
I hope this answers your question. Please feel free to contact HCM again if you have any concerns. Wishing you good health.
