Hi im 34 years old (Female), I have recently had an ultrasound of my neck due to enlarged thyroid. They found a 6cm nodule. I am meeting with a surgeon soon because the ENT says I will most likely need surgery. What would be the reason to take out half or the entire gland?
The report suggest there is a nodule in the thyroid. Next step one will suggest is to get a FNAC - fine needle aspiration cytology to evaluate the type of cells involved. Once its evaluated the treatment will be given accordingly - in case of benign ( good nodule) follow-up is enough. In case of malignant ( bad cells) surgery is indicated. why doctor suggest removal of entire lobe is because - it can regrow if any cells are left over.
good luck. Dr. Ganesh.
