What Does My Ultrasound Scan Report Indicate?

Hi my wife had a ultrasound today for follicle study as we are trying for baby but we are not succeeding. Ultrasound report says Follicular Study Uterus: Anteverted,normal in size,shape & echotexture. No e/o focal lesion noted. Endometrium shows normal appearance. ET=5.7MM. Both ovaries are bulky. Multiple small peripherally arranged follicles with central echogenic stroma seen in both ovaries. Opinion : Multiple small peripherally arranged follicles with central echogenic stroma in both ovaries, correlate with hormonal study t/r/o polycystic ovarian disease. Day 13 Right ovary-18×13mm & endometrium 6mm. Left ovary multiple small follicles. Please confirm what is the problem and can she be pregnant after this???

Hello,

The ultrasound is normal in general but some cysts in the ovaries. This can bring the suspicion of poly-cystic ovarian disease which might cause cysts in the ovaries and might also affect the ovulation (the production of the egg from the woman).

She will need to have some blood tests like FSH, LH and estrogen and progesterone and testosterone levels and the doctor might need to examine her to see for signs of high androgen in her body.

If the diagnosis is confirmed that she has a poly-cystic ovarian disease then she will need to take clomifen and metformin to help her have ovulation and will need to be followed up by ultrasound to see if she is producing the egg and not overproducing cysts.

Most women with this do conceive and have healthy pregnancies.
