What Does My Ultrasound Scan Test Report Indicate?

I had a KUB ultrasound and below are the results: There is a mild pelvocalyceal dilation noted bilaterally. A calcific focus is seen in the midsegment parenchyma of the left kidney measuring 0.5cm. No definite stone nor mass is seen. What does this mean? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello.

The ultrasound report suggests that the collecting system of the kidney, that is the place where urine is collected after coming out of the kidney is mildly enlarged - may also be normal in some people.

There also seems to be a calcific focus, i.e. a calcified spot in one of the kidneys. It may indicate some kind of stone forming process or any old infection or scar which is now getting coated by calcium deposition.

There seems to be no blockage in the pipes that take the urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Generally, enlargement of the space mentioned can occur if there is any block in the pipes or anywhere after that.

If there was any specific reason for which you underwent ultrasound scan, there's not much indication of a cause of your symptoms seen in the scan of the kidneys and ureters. The cause may have to be looked for somewhere else. However, if you do have any symptoms, the pathological process seems to have produced an effect i.e. the enlargement of the space. It needs further evaluation and imaging if necessary.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr Geeta
