He is sending me to a cardiologist but my appt is a month away. He said it looks like i have myxomatous mitral valve prolapse. but it is not leaking. i just wanted to get a little more info on what this means and is
hello, I have gone through your query. Thanks for using HCM. Myxomatous mitral valve means there is thickening and elongation of leaflets of mitral valve. It occurs due to deposition of myxomatous tissue over leaflets without obvious disease. Most of the time it is benign. It may lead to chest pain, giddiness and palpitation. This can be managed with medicine called Propranolol. In some patients it leads to leakage of mitral valve .depending on severity of leak one may need surgery.By and large in majority of patients it is managable with surgery . In your case as there is no leakage ,you should not worry. You should get yearly Echo check up to look for any possible leak. My best wishes Dr.Rajesh Teli,MD.
hello, I have gone through your query. Thanks for using HCM. Myxomatous mitral valve prolapse is relatively benign condition unless it leaks.Usually there is wiered chest discomfert ,palpitation or giddiness as symptoms of this condition.Such valve is usuallly common in females at your age and is not cause of concern. However you must get your echocardiogram to rule out leakage of Mitral valve .Even if it is mild leakage it should not cause any problem. You may take beta blockers like Propranolol 20 mg twice a day for few weeks.Your symptoms would come under control.Subsequently you should check echo every year or two. My best wishes Dr.Rajesh Teli,MD.
