What Does Neck Swelling After Parotid Gland Tumor Surgery Indicate?
MY HUSBAND HAD SURGERY IN AUGUST TO REMOVE A PAROTID GLAND TUMOR. LONG STORY SHORT THE DR DOING THE SURGERY HIT A LARGE BLOOD VESSEL AND HE NEARLY BLED TO DEATH HAD TO BE RUSHED TO THE ER. NOW 4 MONTHS LATER HIS NECK IS SWELLING AGAIN LEFT SIDE BELOW HIS EAR. HIS ENT TOLD HIM HE HAS TONSILITIS AND GAVE ANTIBIOTICS. I AM JUST WORRIED THAT IT MAY BE SOMETHING MORE SERIOUS AS IT IS ONLY ON HIS LEFT SIDE, THE SAME SIDE HE HAD SURGERY. HE HAS NEVER HAD PROBLEMS W/ HIS TONSILS BEFORE AND RARELY GETS SICK. ALSO LAB RESULTS DETERMINED THE MASS REMOVED DURING SURGERY WAS NOT A TUMOR BUT INFLAMED PAROTID TISSUE. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THIS COULD BE SOMETHING OTHER THAN TONILITIS?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain it seems that swelling below the ear on the same side of the surgery can be due to infection in the parotid gland that can occur commonly and is not always a sign of any malignant lesion.. I would suggest you to consult an Oral Surgeon or an ENT expert and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation of the swelling as well as the throat to check for tonsillitis and also if there is a doubt x ray or MRI scan of the gland and saliva culture can be done to confirm the cause and will be treated accordingly.. As of now you can continue taking antibiotics and also anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen.. Drink plenty of water and take a nutritious diet.. Do cool compresses over swelling..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
