What Does Numbness Above The Left Knee Indicate?

I have a numbness in my left leg above my knee on the left side. At times it s an irritating pain that doesn t stop then back to numbness. Any sort of pressure on the area is an almost crippling pain. My dog jumped up on my leg the other day the pain literally put me on my knees it was so bad. Any idea what this might be?
