What Does Numbness On The Left Side Of The Face Indicate?

Last week I took my husband to the emergency room because he had numbness and tingles down the right side of his arm. They treated him for saturday night palsy. Yesterday he awakened with numbness and loss of feeling on the left side of his face. He cant seem to move his eyebrow or the side of his mouth. he says he can chew gum and taste it on the right side but not on the left. He has movement every where else. He is 37 year old white male smoker. We thought maybe stroke but its odd his only symptom is the face no chest pain.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

As per your query your husband have symptoms of numbness in the left side of the face which seems to be due to Bell's palsy which is a condition that causes temporary weakness or paralysis of the muscles in one side of the face and it could be due to facial nerve dysfunctioning. Chances of stroke in your case seems very less.

I would suggest you to consult neurologist/ oral and maxillofacial surgeon for proper diagnosis and rule out condition like trigeminal neuropathy. Doctor may conduct various test to confirm the diagnosis and may prescribe muscle relaxant and anti inflammatory medications. Till now start doing exercises of facial muscles and go for massage or light muscle exercise. Avoid exposure to allergen.
