What Does Pain Around The Ankles Indicate?

Good Afternoon! I have been experiencing pain across the top of my right ankle. Right where the ankle and top of foot meet. I have a long history of sprains on this ankle and understand that this pain is probably generated from these injuries. The pain comes and goes, it is not constant. The pain happens when taking a step. I also experience weakness with the pain. At times I have caught myself from tripping since it feels like the foot has gone out from under me.

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. As there is a long history of injuries thus it is wise to remember that Venous stasis can occur due to INJURY, surgery or poor circulation, and it can indicate the presence of life-threatening blood clots in the deep veins, so seek an opinion of vascular surgeon or visit an ER and ask for doppler study

2. If the examination done by vascular surgeon comes normal, get a second opinion from an orthopedic surgeon regarding X-ray of Ankle for fracture or torn ligaments [if any].

PS. As pain is still there, it denotes that either ankle has not healed properly or was not rehabilitated properly. [furthter workup is essential with physical therapist, doctor/podiatrist]

3. If the injury is severe then a medical referral is essential and later to a sports therapist for proper evaluation of running/jumping and footwear and strengthening exercises.
