What Does Pain Around The Kidney Area Along With Nausea Indicate?

Good evening Dr. Rynne, I have been having pain in my left kidney and often accompanied by nausea. It seems to occur when I have had a lot of water or triggered by one glass of alcohol. (interestingly enough, not red wine though) I have had a blood test that showed no indications of anything wrong as well as no blood or protein in my urine. I have recently completed a 24 hour urine collection test but have not heard the results as of yet. He was suspecting kidney stones and that is why he ordered the collection. I do not have a diet that is typical of kidney stones and no family history of this but I know it is still possible. I was hoping to get other possible scenarios so when I meet with him, I can ask pertinent questions or bring to light other possibilities. Thank you for your time. Susan

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Presence of flank pain along with nausea strongly indicates for kidney stones than anything else. In my opinion looking for kidney stones is the right thing.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
