Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, I have pain about an inch below my R knee. My doctor believes it is bursitis. However, about 2 years ago, I went to a sports medicine doctor and he thought I was doing too much strenuous exercise and said I should avoid any pounding-type exercise (jogging, jumping jacks, etc.). I am 30 lbs. overweight but since Oct 2017, have been going to the gym regularly Mon-Fri for about 1 1/2 hrs. The pain is not constant and seems to subside when I do leg extension exercises at the gym (using 25 lb. weights) and take 400 mg of ibuprofen. I was getting nervous because I know 2 people who have knee pain and their doctors indicate they definitely need knee replacement surgery. What do you think? Can bursitis lead to knee replacement?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Bursitis is not an indication for knee replacement. It is mostly due to labored use of Knee joint. So, it is better to avoid strenuous exercise.
Do more physiotherapy to strengthen bursa. Try to lose weight (5 kgs more) and do not take Ibuprofen medicine regularly. Use warm water pad and ice packs alternatively for pain relief.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Kaushal Bhavsar
