Hi,
Pain during sex after a vaginal
hysterectomy may be due to various reasons. Normally, the surgeons advise to wait for a period till the process of healing of operation is complete. Normally this period after vaginal hysterectomy is 6-8 weeks. However, in some cases, this period may be long.
It is always advised to wait ,till the healing is complete. Attempting an orgasm thru other methods during this period may also cause pain as contractions of pelvic muscles may exert tension on the sutures of wound. Even after complete healing, the surgical
menopause as a result of operation, may cause
dryness of vagina and hence, pain during sex.
This is likely more, if the ovaries have also been removed in operation. Use of a lubricant, may solve the problem in most of the cases. However, it is always advised to go slow. Try experimenting with small toys or finger before having sex with your partner to see if penetration still causes pain. Hysterectomy can trigger a lot of emotional changes due to
hormonal changes.
A mixed feeling of joy and relief for getting relief in pain and symptoms of primary cause to a feeling of sorrow for getting the menopause so early and loss of the main sex organ. In these cases, the feeling of
anxiety or emotional disturbance may also cause a pain during sex. Reaching a loved one or a counsellor may make this easier.
If the problem is persisting, then
HRT under guidance of your doctor may be a viable solution. However, it is always a good thing, that studies have revealed that there is no negative long term effect on sexual activity or performance as a result of hysterectomy. Rather in some cases, it may improve the sexual performance than pre-operative level.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
