What Does Pain In The Balls Of The Feet Indicate?

My husband had been complaining for a year about the bottom of his foot hurting him to the point it was getting difficult to walk. He had x-rays taken of it several times and was told it could be calcium deposits. He was admitted to the hospital for what he was told was dehydration. While there he told the staff about his foot. He was told by the symptoms he described that what he had was the gout . Although while in the hospital which turned out to be 12 days, he was given medication for the gout, at the time of his discharge he was not healed and in just a few weeks time his skin began to discolor. His family doctor recommended we see a surgeon which we immediately did. This surgeon gave us a debrideing ointment which I was to apply to this area twice a day. However the area appeared to be getting not only deeper in color but also began to cover a larger area of his foot. About 3-4 weeks later we are in the hospital again this time my husband was facing below the knee amputation. By this time he had so much poison running through his system. My husband died about 3 weeks after surgery. He became ill with an infection and later died of sepsis. A few days before he passed the skin from his amputation began to peel away like the skin of an onion leaving just a bloody stump. The wound care nurse wanted to know who was responsible for performing the surgery. What in your opinion could have gone wrong and why did my husband get gangrene in the first place?
