What Does Pain In The Chest On The Left Side Indicate?

Out of nowhere my upper left chest started hurting this afternoon. the pain is right above my breast. I can feel the pain as I take deep breath and my left hand feels cold. I feel if I stress out about it I think the pain is worse or moving to other areas so I m trying not to stress out. I don t want to rush to the ER if I don t have to however 7 years ago I had a DVT and 2 clots in my lungs so of course it s hard not to stress. Any help/advice is appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Since you had history of DVT (deep venous thrombosis), we should definitely rule out heart diseases for your left sided chest pain. So immediately consult Cardiologist and get done blood pressure monitoring, ECG, 2D echo and stress test (trade mill test). If all these are normal then no need to worry for heart diseases. Sometimes musculoskeletal pain can also cause similar symptoms. So avoid sudden jerky movements of chest and left shoulder. Avoid heavyweight lifting and strenuous exercise. Apply warm water pad on affected areas of chest. Take simple painkiller and muscle relaxant drugs like ibuprofen and thiocolchicoside. Don't worry, you will be alright with all these but first rule out heart diseases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
