What Does Pain In The Chest Upon Bending Indicate?

When bent over forward to pick up trash on floor I had a sudden burning pain in center of my chest, is thus heart related? I ve never had heart problems or high blood pressure, not diabetic and the pain subsided after I stood and took deep breaths. I m 62 year old woman with no health issues to date.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

This could be due to reflux. The sphincter between the food pipe (esophagus) and the stomach can become relaxed in certain conditions (due to age, obesity, over eating,). This can cause acid to go up from your stomach (where it belongs) to your esophagus. This can cause a burning sensation or pain in the center of the chest.

Sometimes, if you have a large belly, bending can cause the abdominal fat and organs to shift. This can cause discomfort and pain too. If this occurs again, please consult your doctor for a complete exam. Try to squat a little while trying to pick things up off the floor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
