What Does Pain In The Left Thumb Indicate?

About 10 days ago, I had joint pain develop in my left thumb. (I am right handed.) I woke up during the night and the top joint of my thumb seemed frozen. After painful effort, I am able to flex the joint, but it remains stiff and painful. This condition is not improving and it seems to be getting worse, as it now locks up some during the day. The discomfort is constant and has caused my left hand to become weak. Thank you. Teresa

Hello,

Joint pain and that too in only left thumb doesn't indicate any arthritic or goutic problems at all. Usually, it will be traumatic and if there is no swelling of the joint, redness, then it won't be an alarming symptom at all.

Some unnoticed trauma might have caused all this. So if you are having more pain, you can take any available painkiller like diclofenac, paracetamol, tramadol for now but I think it will subside on its own.

If you have any pain along with swelling or redness appearing on the thumb or any other joints then go to orthopaedician for examination.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Archana
