What Does Pain In The Middle Back Indicate?

Hi Dr Rynne, I have had a gradual onset of pain in my middle left back that goes into my hip and sometimes around the side. It is both a dull ache and a sharp pain. Sharper when I get up - like a pulled muscle, but I have not done anything strenuous. This has been going on for a couple of weeks, and seems to be getting more tender.
