What Does Pain In The Outer Ears Indicate?

4 days ago I had slight pain in the from outer ear (triages). I was a bit more painful with chewing. I have a some TMJ in the joint there, but never enough to complain about. It is now noticeable swollen by others , chewing has become more painful. There is not redness nor signs of a sight of infection. The swelling appears to be advancing down the outer side of face towards the jaw line and some in the outer ear canal. There are no piercings in this area. The piercings of the earlobe was more than 50 years ago. I have applied dry hear with no relief.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I think the pain and the swelling is related with temporo mandibular joint.
Usually TMJ disorders are not accompained with redness and signs of inflamation, because it's not a superficial problem.
You can use Ibuprofen 400 mg three times a day for some days, and paracetamol 500 mg 4 times a day for pain and swelling relieve, try to eat soft foods, avoid extreme movements of the jaw.
You can also try using anti anxiety medications and relaxation tecniques to relieve stress, because makes the TMJ disorders worse.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
