What Does Pain In The Right Foot Indicate?

Along the right side of my right foot I have been experiencing pain. It occurs while standing, while sitting, while lying down, and while standing, yes all the time. There is no relief in any position. In my apartment, there are only three places for me to be - in my wheelchair, on the toilet, and, on my hospital bed where I sleep in a sitting upright position. I do have arthritis and I am obese. I have no memory of an actual injury. Pain medication does not provide relief. I am 62 years old, receive SSDI, and am on Medicare and Medicaid. What has me worried now, is that while in bed, the pain and numbness has extended up through the right side of the leg to the knee! What is happening?

General Surgeon 's  Response
In all probability, you are having Neuropathic pain and parasthesia of the right foot and leg. Usually this is associated with Diabetes Mellitus. If you do not have diabetes, then you would be having nerve compression at the lumbar vertebra due to a prolapsed disc, or even at the knee area due to the arthritis. You must get investigated to rule out Diabetes, MRI done of the lumbar spine to see for prolapsed intervertibral disc, and MRI also of the knee area to see for nerve compression. A 'Nerve conduction test', of the lower limbs would also help in diagnosis of the cause of nuropathy. There are medications which will relieve you of this neuropathic discomfort. However, if there is any specific cause detected that too also should be treated. Please consult a Neurologist who would advise the necessary investigations, and advise you on the management.
