Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi Dr. Rynne . . . . . . I started feeling upper left thigh pain about 3 weeks ago. I don t recall injuring it at all although I usually bike around 100 miles per week. I visited my primary care doctor 2 weeks ago and his diagnosis was a thigh muscle strain. I originally thought it might be a groin pull due to the pain being in that area. My doctor also checked for a hernia which he said I didn t have. He gave me an order for up to 12 visits for physical therapy. I ve completed 4 visits, consisting of stretching exercises and electrical pulse and heat treatments. The PT doesn t seem to be helping much and now I have the same pain in my right leg. There are days when it feels good and biking seems to help (although I haven t ridden in a week). My doctor did not take any xrays or prescribe any medication for me. I guess I m wondering if there could be another cause for the pain? Thanks! Steve
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes, possibility of musculoskeletal pain is more likely. Thigh is weight bearing part of body. So thigh pain is commonly associated with soft tissue injury like pulled muscle or muscle strain etc. So take proper rest. Apply warm water pad on affected areas of thigh. Avoid sudden jerky movements. Take painkiller and muscle relaxant drugs like ibuprofen and thiocolchicoside. You will mostly improve with all these in 2-3 days. If not improving then get done x ray.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
