What Does Pain On The Right Side Of The Buttocks Indicate?

For the last couple months I have been awakened by extreme pain in buttocks when I laid on my right side. Now it s when I lay on either side. Lying on my back relieved the pain. In the last couple of days pain appears when I sit and stand up, walking up stairs and just walking. Is this an orthopedic problem or rheumatologist issue....or something worst? Please help. Thank you. Always in Pain.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
Would you clarify a few things for me, please?

*how old are you?
*male or female?
*what is your height and weight?
*do you smoke?
*do you have any other medical issues or take any medications?
*if female, have you attained menopause? When?
*does the pain radiate to your thighs, calves or feet?
*any numbness?

Your symptoms are suggestive of hip joint problem. This is primarily an orthopedic issue.
I recommend :
-an orthopedic consult, a rheumatologist opinion, if necessary, after clinical examination and tests.
-x rays of both hip joints, mri if necessary.
-blood tests (complete blood count, calcium and phosphorus levels, thyroid and parathyroid hormone levels, kidney and liver function tests )
-electrocardiogram

Based on these we can find out whats happening.
In the meantime, try applying warm compresses of the hip joints and area where it hurts.
Do this thrice a day. If it doesn't help. Try ice packs.
Anti-inflammatory medications ( lbuprofen can help with symptomatic relief)

Talk to your doctor before taking medications.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
