What Does Polychromasia On A Blood Test Report Mean?

I had a HEMOGRAM W/DIFFERENTIAL blood test and all the results looked to be in range, but at the bottom of the report it listed this. Haven t seen this before. Not sure what polychromasia is. Platelet morphology evaluated, no significant abnormalities identified. Slight polychromasia.

Hi,

Polychromasia reflect a premature form of red blood cells that is reticulocyte. So you have to investigate further with reticulocyte count estimation.

For that laboratory will take 2 ml blood in EDTA vacutainer. If it is elevated than will discuss further.

In hemolytic anaemia, it can be elevated. Don't worry about that. You can revert back with reticulocyte count report and will guide you further.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Parth Goswami, General & Family Physician
