Hi, Polycystic ovaries occurs due to a combination of genetic, hormonal imbalance and environmental causes. Failure of ovulation can cause follicular cyst to retain within ovaries which forms a cyst. Normally, such cysts get absorbed with time without causing any symptoms. Some large cysts may remain and cause irregular period, excess hair growth and infertility. Hormonal pills are the common medication given. Treatments include birth control pills to regularise periods. Metformin is also given to prevent diabetes / insulin resistance.
