What Does Recurring Pain In Right Side Rib Area Suggest?

I have had a reoccurring pain on my right side rib area for about 5 years – it comes and goes in 6 to 9 month intervals – lasts about a week and goes away – this time it won’t go away, it is very painful like a stab when I do a sit up motion or lie on my back and lift my pelvis (bridge). My wife tells me there is a lump or protrusion I do not see this but she says it has been very evident at times. I have recently seen a chiropractor, massage therapist, physical therapist and even acupuncture all to no avail. When feeling “right” I work out pretty hard with Stairmaster, yoga, swimming and weight lifting (not heavy but a pretty intense circuit) – I am 5’10’’ and 250 Lbs., I do NOT smoke but I do drink 2 or 3 martinis a day. My friend Dr. Wallace a Radiologist, has looked at R-Rays and MRI’s that I have done in the past but saw nothing – He says if I get a CT scan he might be able to see the problem. Stanley

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is nice to know that your friend, radiologist will help you after the CT is done. Please do it at the earliest so that treatment can be started at the earliest. Your symptoms are indicative of either costochondritis or intercostal neuralgia. Get clinically examined, get treated. Avoid physical strain from repeated exercise or sudden exertion, as it may trigger your pain. Presently, you are suggested to avoid all type of physical activities that are strenuous.

Take NSAIDS, Naproxan / Combiflam, one SOS for relief. Take it after food. Heat therapy and massage therapy effectively reduce the discomfort. Intercostal neuralgia is caused by trauma, moving heavy furniture / weight lifting, difficult yoga postures, viral infection, eg. shingles, etc. The treatment will depend on the cause of intercostal neuralgia, you will be given conservative treatment or RFA, thermal radiofrequency ablation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
