What Does Severe Hair Loss Indicate?

My grandson is 5yr old high functioning autism. Teachers says he reads at age 7 level and loves school. Will start kinder this fallTonight my daughter called quite alarmed because chunks of hair were just falling of his top left side of his head as she caressed his head. What can this be? He loves school but has not been in school backseat of summer vacations so zI wonder if it s stress related.
