What Does Severe Pain Behind The Right Ear Indicate?

I have throbbing pain behind my right ear that runs down my a few inches. It is very difficult to find a position in which I can sleep comfortably at night. It is also present most of the day. What could it be? I had surgery on my 5th, 6th and 7th vertebrae about a year ago for disc pinching nerves. This was on the opposite side though. Could their be any connection? Thanks for help you can provide.
