Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 83 year old wife is on pradaxa 150 mg twice daily for afib. She also takes antenalol (12.5 mg) daily. A few days ago she experienced excruciating pain in her jaw -- preliminary diagnosis trigeminal neuralgia for which was prescribed oxcarbazepine150 mg twice daily (total 300 mg) which she can up to 300 mg twice daily if pain persists. She cannot eat/chew solid foods; must drink protein/etc. drinks. It s been almost 4 days since she began oxcarbazepine and she has has constant headaches and has thrown up once each of the last two days. She can sleep and is NOT disoriented. What can she take to relieve headache which will not interact.
As per your query, your wife have severe pain in jaw which is mainly due to nerve disorder that is trigeminal neuralgia and exaggeration could be due to bruxism , TML problem and malocclusion.
I would suggest you to consult oral surgeon for proper examination. The doctor may order CT scan of TMJ to confirm the diagnosis and may give night guard after checking occlusion.
Apply warm compresses to TMJ and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain. Go for facial muscle physical therapy along with stretching exercises. For now, you should eat soft food.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
