What Does Severe Pain In The Left Hand Indicate?

I have extreme pain , left hand. went to urgent care today. diagnosed as a type of arthritis flare up. I was given a shot in my hand, some kind of steroid. I will start a week or so of a z pac of steroids tomorrow. emergency physician said that would cause high sugar count . I have type 2 diabetes, controlled. so he said no bread or sugar or rice, etc. while on steroids. can I have whole grains? he also said no aleve or nsaids (I never heard that before). been 6 hours since the shot. pain persists. can I have aleve? whole grains? Thank you!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

NSAIDs along with steroids would predispose to gastric ulcers. A proton pump inhibitor should be added. If the pain is severe then Tramadol with paracetamol can be a safe alternative to Aleve. Yes, you can take whole grain.

Wishing you the best of health.

Thanks
