What Does Severe Pain In Upper Stomach Post Gallbladder Surgery Suggest?

I had gallbladder surgery three years ago. After the surgery I did fine for a few months, but then I began to experience chronic, unbearable pain in the right side of my upper stomach that came about if I coughed too hard, lifted something or turned too quickly. If felt like two eggs in my side and the pain lasted for over 10 minutes. Could not breathe, or move until pain stopped. Went to doctor, surgeon said I had a hernia. Had hernia operation July, 2014. Said hernia was repaired. One month later same pain came back again. Went back to surgeon had second Catscan done; found nothing. Pain still existing. I am miserable. Going to have colonoscopy and endoscopy soon to see what s going on. Doctors say maybe scar tissue or irritable bowels. As long as I take Miralax, I am okay for a while. Can you tell me something. I am 64 yo female; active, but cannot do much now due to fear of hurting.

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

As you had scan done with no findings, the following investigations may help find the cause of pain:
1) Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP)
2) Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
3) Ultrasound imaging of kidneys

A few probable causes of your pain are:
1) Kidney problems
- Infection
- Kidney stones
- Urinary tract infection
2) Pancreas problems
- Pancreatitis
- Peritonitis
3) Stomach problems
4) Peptic ulcers
5) Gastritis
6) Liver problems
- Infection
- Abscess
- Inflammation
7) Irritable bowel syndrome

With the above mentioned investigations, gastroenterologist will know what exactly the problem is and thus initiate appropriate treatment. Please discuss the above with your surgeon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
