What Does Severe Pain On The Back After Recovering From Shingles Indicate?

My sister has had severe shingles in July of this year around on the left side of her waist from the center in the front to the center of her back. The skins infection has healed but she still gets some sharp pain intermittently once a day or once every other day. The pain is so intense that she needs some pain killer. I know that the pain survives the skin healing, but is there a time when it will disappear or wlll she endure that pain for the rest of her life? How long until she gets rid of the pain?
