What Does Sharp Pain On The Left Side Of The Waist Indicate?

I am having a sharp pain on my left side at about my belt line. It is above my hip joint. I believe the pain initially started while golfing. I am 69 years of age and still very active, however the pain is very acute when I play golf or walk. I tried taking some Advil put that does not seem to work. I have not tried Tylenol yet. My sense is the pain is caused by a pulled muscle or tendon. Any idea what could be causing the pain? What is the best course of treatment?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Since the left flank pain started while golfing, it could in all probability be a strained muscle. However if the pain persists, please get an abdominal USG done to rule out any renal or uretric stones as a cause of the left flank pain.

Thank You!
