What Does Slightly Enlarged Heterogeneous Gland Mean In The Following Report?
Findings: I just had an ultrasound of my thyroid and the found the right lobe measures 4.5x2.1x1.4 cm and the left lobe measures 4.9x2.3x2.6 cm. The parenchyma is heterogeneous bilaterally. There is a 2.0x0.9x1.4 cm isoechoic nodule seen in mid portion of right lobe. A large complex nodule is seen in midportion of left lobe measuring 3.8x2.1x.27 cm. There are no extra thyroidal masses or fluid collections and the nearby great vessels appear normal. Impression: Slightly enlarged heterogeneous gland., Bilateral nodules as discussed above. Can you tell me what the treatment would be? Would they need to do a biopsy?
Hello, Yes, you will need a biopsy. A small percentage of thyroid nodules may be cancer, most are not. the procedure for getting a thyroid nodule biopsy is called a fine needle aspiration (FNA). it can be done easily in the out patient setting. Regards
