What Does Small Hiatal Hernia With Thickened Distal Esophagus Mean?

I recently had a ct scan and it showed that I have a small hiatal hernia and thickening of the distal espophagus. Often when i eat it feels like my food gets stuck and I must drink alot of water or my food comes up and I vomit. What does this mean and should I see a gastro specialist???

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Your swallowing difficulty or vomiting after food could be due to this thickening of the esophagus or hiatus hernia which is nothing but the protused part of the esophagus into the thoracic cavity through small opening in the cavity.

It may also cause wheezing or shortness of breath and dull chest pain occasionally.

CT scan you had already done which is good.

You must see gastroenterologist with all these reports and he may advice you for upper GI endoscopy as per the intensity of the problem.

If symptoms are not troublesome then generally it requires no treatment.

Regards,
