What Does Soreness In The Left Arm Indicate?

My wife, Female age 35 5 8 , 240#, type 2 diabetic, never had children, has a sudden onset of soreness in her left arm. Any time she tries to move it, she has severe pain that feels like a broken arm. She first noticed it 48 hrs ago. There s no bruising, and she didn t bump or bang it on anything. She s had no abnormal activity for a long time. When she drops her arm to the side, she has sharp pain in the shoulder area about 4 below the neckline. What could this be?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

When the pain gets worse from arm movements it's usually related to neuromuscular disorders. In my opinion it might be a pinched nerve from any herniated disc of the cervical(neck)column, or a problem of the rotator cuff, which is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint.

She can use ibuprofen 400 mg( three times a day )and paracetamol+codeine ( two times a day) for 5-6 days, and try to keep the arm in rest.

If your wife has no improvement during this period, or if she gets worse, she has to consult an orthopedist to perform a physical examination and put the right diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
