Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Over the past few months I have noticed bloody streaks in my stools...this is not every time, just once in awhile. I have never thought anything about it because of my age. Thinking this was just part of getting older and my body showing signs of aging. This might happen once a week maybe twice. It s like new blood nothing old or dark. No dark stools. I really don t have any other symptoms. Is this something that can be normal for people 63 and older?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. Streaks of blood in stools is caused due to the presence of anal fissures. It occurs due to mucosal tear in the anal canal. It may be asymptomatic at times. But it may cause problems later like pain and more bleeding if it gets aggravated by constipation. Anal fissures can treated conservatively by adding bulk and softening the stool taking laxatives, consuming a high fiber diet and taking sitz baths. Ointments containing anesthetics like lignocaine jelly and steroids can be applied. In case the symptoms become severe, sphincterotomy needs to be done by surgery. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
