What Does String Like Discharge From The Eyes Indicate?
My 19 year old daughter gets what looks like strings coming out of her eyes. She went to an Optometrist about 2 weeks ago because she wanted to be fitted for contacts. The optometrist told her she wasn t producing enough tear activity so prescribed a steroidal drop for her to use for a month and then come back to be fitted for contacts. In the meantime, my daughter mentioned she had been having these strings come out of her eyes for many months. They really irritate her eyes. What are these strings ? Should I take her to see an opthamologist?
Yes, you should definitely take her to ophthalmologist.
These strings are suggestive of infection.
She might be having eye infection since months which is worsened by steroid drops.
So stop steroid drops and immediately take her to ophthalmologist.
She will need antibiotic eyedrops and Methylcellulose eyedrops.
Also avoid contact lens for 1-2 weeks.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Kaushal Bhavsar,
Pulmonologist
