What Does Sweet Smelling Bowel Movement In An Infant Indicate?
good evening, today by a doctor I was asked if my daughters stool is sweet (16 weeks with undergoing problems of colic, reflux etc) It Is very sweet (formula fed baby) and was runny before going on gaviscon. she took me to put her on goats milk but I can find any evidence relating sweet smelling poo to cows milk allergy, could you enlighten me on this ?? many thanks
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Sweet smelling stool is quite common among infants and it could be due to malabsorption. Malabsorption occurs when your body is unable to absorb the proper amount of nutrients from the food you eat. It generally occurs after minor gastroenteritis and it will subside by itself. Continue breastfeeds and it will subside by itself.
Wishing you good health.
Thanks.
