What Does Swelling In The Right Arm Indicate?

I noticed about a month ago that my right arm is slightly swollen as compared to my left arm. The swelling seems to be from my shoulder to my hand. Initially, I didn t have any pain but I noticed a few days ago that I had some pain in my upper arm and once in awhile when I lifted my arm up to brush my hair or scratch my upper back, my arm felt weak. I already took an ultrasound of my neck and right arm a couple of weeks ago which came back negative for clots. What could be causing the swelling in my right arm?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

As per your clinical history, is concerned please follow like this-
1) Do a clinical examination by a neurologist and to confirm exact pathology do MRI scan.
2) Do take over-the-counter painkiller Ibuprofen and prescription medications gabapentin and talk to your physio for a specific exercise plan.
3) Discuss with your doctor about cortisone injections for swelling.
Do follow lifestyle modifications like this -
1) Do exercise regularly. Strengthening the trunk muscles helps stabilize and support the spine.
2) Try to maintain good posture. Good posture reduces the pressure on your spine and disks. Keep your back straight and aligned, particularly when sitting for long periods. Lift heavy objects properly, making your legs, not your back.
3) Try to maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight puts more pressure on the spine and disks, making them more susceptible to herniation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Uday Nath Sahoo
