What Does Swelling In The Salivary Gland Indicate?

I am a 43yr old female with sever swelling in my right salivary gland by my jaw and ear it is very painful and I can not eat sleep and it feels like I am having a ice pick shoved into my ear. I have had problems with stones for the last 2 decades but this is different in that I cant pass the stone and it is very hard very painful and it has been like this now for 7 days or so and getting worse as time goes on

Thanks for the query..

Well, it looks like complete obstruction on the duct of the salivary gland that can cause severe expansion of the gland causing pain and swelling..

There can also be infection in the gland due to stasis or stoppage in the flow of saliva..

So my suggestion is to consult an Oral Surgeon or an Emergency room and get evaluated..

You can be advised an x- ray or MRI scan to confirm the cause.

If there is obstruction or blockage in the duct then it has to be opened up manually or surgically..

Also if there is infection antibiotics has to be taken..
