What Does Swelling In The Tongue After Tooth Extraction Indicate?

My husband had an infected tooth extracted on Friday. Sat evening he could barely swallow and his tongue was swollen. The dentist gave him an antibiotic on Sunday for an infection and told him to double it up. So he took two 300 mg of the antibiotic 3 times and and on Monday he took one. It is now tues morn and he still can t swallow and his tongue swelling will go down and then back up. Why is it hard for him to swallow. He can t eat and barely sleeps?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

There can be possible tongue swelling when the extracted tooth had deep roots.

Addition of anti inflammatory drug with proteolytic enzymes, such as Chymoral Forte, Trypsin or Chymotrypsin; gargles with salted lukewarm water will help great.

Wish him fine recovery.

Thanks.

Regards.
