What Does Swelling On The Feet And Ankles Indicate?

I have swollen foot, ankle and calf. Red blotch and pain in calf. I have tested positive for nerve damage to lower legs due to back issues. I had knee replacement on that leg 17 years ago. I have spinal stenosis, disc narrowing and other back issues.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As you have already informed, you have been tested positive for nerve damage of the lower limbs, due to the spinal problems you have. This neuropathic damage can cause swelling of the legs and feet, sometimes, paresthesia, numbness, pain, tingling and similar sensations.

You can get a nerve conduction test done which will quantify the neuropathic damage. The neurologist would then be able to advise you on medication to help improve nerve function and relieve your discomfort.

For the swelling, it is best to wear correctly fitting compression stockings from toes to mid thighs on both sides, from morning till you go to bed at night. This will prevent the swelling and the red blotches.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ajit Kumar Varma
