What Does Swollen Area In Mouth Post Removal Of Wisdom Tooth Suggest?

I got my wisdom teeth removed two weeks ago. Yesterday I had a follow up and he said that everything looked good. All the areas were healed over. I woke up this morning and my bottom left gums where I got my took removed is very swollen. It does not cause pain only a little sore like when you get your teeth cleaned and your gums get sore. It feels like that when touched. Nothing is discolored either. It just is swollen. the areas are very clean and do not look infected at all. I also have the tooth closest to it the gum is detaching from it. My doctor said it was normal and will heal within time. What is the cause of the swelling though? Is there any way to make it go down? it just does not seem normal after two weeks.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain swollen gums in the area from where the wisdom tooth was extracted after 2 weeks is not a normal sign as the swelling mostly gets subsided in a week to 10 days after wisdom tooth extraction..

As you have a slightly sore swelling even now it indicates that either there is some left over root piece in the extraction socket or any foreign body inclusion that is becoming reactive and causing swelling due to inflammation..
For this get an x Ray done and confirm the cause and in case of root piece or foreign body removal of the same followed by antibiotics and painkillers will relieve..

In case if the above conditions are not found then any food lodgment in the gums in that area causing infection and inflammation leading to swelling of gums..

Nothing to worry in this case also as doing warm saline gargles and taking antibiotics like Amoxicillin 500 mg thrice a day and Anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen can relieve..

Hope this information helps..
