What Does The AFI Indicate?

I am diagnosed with low AFI of 6.0cm at 36 weeks. My gynae prescribed me betnesol 3 ampules for two days continuously. What is it actually for? Will I have to undergo c-sec or can I have normal delivery as well. Any specific time limit before which this injection is given?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Low AFI (amniotic fluid index) means you have less water around the baby than you should. This means that the pregnancy is at risk and the doctor has given you Betnesol injections to help the lungs of the baby mature in case they will need to intervene early to deliver the baby.

Betnesol injections are used to increase the survival of the baby because premature babies are at risk of lung immaturity and death. So, taking this injection helps the lungs mature and is recommended if there is any risk for delivery before 34 weeks.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
